Rail delays for Asia imports – JOC - The crush of peak-season cargo is hitting West Coast ports, causing delays along the intermodal rail network to destinations in the Midwest and on the East Coast. Delays at rail transfer yards and along mainline routes range from one to four days. Delays are starting at on-dock rail yards at the ports and extending through the entire intermodal network due to congestion and equipment shortages; delays of one to two days at on-dock rail yards, two to three days along mainline routes and three to four days in the Chicago area. The Panama Canal is operating close to capacity, and delays of one to two days on all-water services from Asia to the East Coast are common. UP's network has been disrupted by damage to tracks in the Gulf Coast region from hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The rail delays began to surface in October as large retailers moved huge shipments of holiday merchandise from Asia . Advance bookings indicate volumes should remain strong through the first two weeks of November.
Shipping returns to normal at Florida ports – JOC - The U.S. Coast Guard said normal ship traffic has resumed at the Port of Miami and Port Everglades after Hurricane Wilma swept through the region. The ports suffered minimal damage from the Category 3 storm. Power has been restored to the Port of Miami , and the port's cranes were undamaged. About 1.5 million homes and offices are still without power gas is still in short supply with long lines. Expect shipment delays until the end of this week.
